Your Hot Florence Attic Is Quietly Aging Your Roof: A Ventilation Maintenance Guide

You climb into the attic in late July to grab a box of Christmas lights, and the heat hits you like opening an oven door. The air is thick and stale. The plywood under the roof feels warm to the touch, and over in the corner near the eaves you notice a faint dark streak on the wood. That stuffy, baking attic is not just uncomfortable. It is a sign your roof’s ventilation is not keeping up, and in our Pee Dee summers that slowly shortens the life of everything above your head.

The Problem: A Roof That Can’t Breathe

A roof system is built to let air move. Cooler air enters low, near the eaves, and warm air escapes high, near the ridge. When that airflow stalls, two bad things happen at once. In summer, attic temperatures in Florence can climb past 130 degrees while the outside air sits around 95. That trapped heat radiates up into your shingles and bakes them from below.

In winter and during our humid stretches, the same stuck air traps moisture. Every shower, every load of laundry, and every gas appliance pushes water vapor into the house, and some of it drifts up into the attic. With nowhere to go, it condenses on the underside of the roof deck. That is the dark streak you saw on the plywood.

Over a few seasons, poor ventilation can show up as curling shingles, a musty smell, higher cooling bills, and in bad cases, soft spots in the decking. It is one of the most common issues we find during a routine roof check in Florence, and most homeowners never knew it was happening.

The Diagnosis: Why Florence Attics Get Stuck

Most ventilation trouble comes down to a few causes you can actually check for.

Blocked intake vents. Air is supposed to enter at the soffits, the underside of your roof overhang. Over the years, attic insulation gets pushed into the eaves and seals those vents shut. Once intake is blocked, the exhaust vents at the top have nothing to pull, and the whole system stops moving.

Not enough exhaust. A common rule of thumb is one square foot of vent area for every 150 square feet of attic floor, split evenly between intake and exhaust. A 1,800 square foot attic should have roughly 12 square feet of total venting. Many older Florence homes were built with far less, especially houses that have had a second layer of shingles or additions added on.

Mixed vent types fighting each other. If a home has both a powered fan and ridge vents, the fan can pull air from the nearest ridge vent instead of from the soffits, short-circuiting the airflow. More vents is not automatically better when they work against each other.

How to Check It Yourself

On a hot day, put your hand near a soffit vent from inside the attic. You should feel cool air drawing in. Then look at the ridge. Feel any warm air leaving? If both feel dead still, your system is stalled. While you are up there, look for dark water stains on the decking, rusted nail tips, or matted, damp insulation. Those all point to trapped moisture.

The Fix: Restoring Airflow the Right Way

The good news is that ventilation repairs are usually far cheaper than the damage they prevent. Here is the practical order of operations.

Clear the intake first. If insulation has buried your soffit vents, the fix can be as simple as installing baffles, small chutes that hold the insulation back and keep a clear air channel at each rafter bay. On a typical Florence ranch this might run a few hundred dollars and instantly restore intake.

Balance the exhaust. A continuous ridge vent running along the peak is the most even way to let hot air out, and it pairs naturally with clear soffits. If your attic is badly under-vented, adding ridge venting during a repair visit, or during a re-roof, brings the system up to that 1-to-150 target.

Address moisture sources. Make sure bathroom and kitchen exhaust fans vent all the way outside, not just into the attic. We see vent hoses dumping warm, wet air straight onto the decking more often than you would think.

Consider a quick numbers example. Say an attic ran 135 degrees in July and held curling shingles plus damp decking. Clearing soffits and adding a 30 foot ridge vent might cost around $1,500. Left alone, that same trapped heat and moisture could cut a 25 year shingle roof’s life down toward 16 or 18 years, turning a tune-up into a five figure replacement years early. Ventilation is cheap insurance.

My attic has a powered fan, so isn’t it already vented enough? Not necessarily. A powered fan only helps if the intake at the soffits is open. If insulation is blocking the eaves, the fan may pull conditioned air up from inside your house instead, which raises your cooling bill and still leaves the roof deck baking. Check the intake before trusting the fan.

Could my ventilation be too much instead of too little? It can be unbalanced, which acts like too much. If you have several roof vents but blocked soffits, the upper vents can pull humid outdoor air in during storms and let rain blow in. The goal is balance, intake and exhaust roughly equal, not just maximum vent count.

I keep getting a brown stain on my upstairs ceiling, but no shingles are missing. Could ventilation cause that? Yes.
